How to make sure condoms are in the best state possible before using them?

Condoms are extremely fragile contraceptive methods which deteriorate the minute they are stored and continue to become more and more fragile as time goes by.

Sperm is the smallest cell in the human body, so a micro tear might be all that it takes.

The following are the steps before use.

The Date of Expiration: This is the first thing you'll have to check. Expired condoms become fragile and break more easily. If you have the box, then you need to check the expiration date on the box and the wrapper.

1. Look at the state of the packing: Does it look damaged or good? Are any of the edges unsealed? If the package has any printing or stamp, is it rubbing off?

2. Safety bubble: Before condoms are sealed inside their individual wrapper, a small amount of air is placed inside to create a small air cushion and protect the latex. So place the center of the condom between your thumb and index finger, and squeeze softly. If you feel air inside, then the package hasn't been perforated and the condom inside is fine. If the packing is flat, then the package is probably perforated it and you need to abandon the condom.

3. Status of the lubricant: Lubricated condoms should slip inside its package easily. Push on the edges of the condom and move it a little bit. If it doesn't, then the lubricants may have dried out.

4. After opening the condom carefully with your fingertips, touch it. Condoms should be soft, and extremely flexible. If the condom feels hard or strange in any way, change a new one.

After that, comes the process of using it. Check if it’s not upside down and place it in the tip of the fully erect penis before any direct genital contact with your partner. If you have any piercings in the area, remove them beforehand. Squeeze the tip of the condom and roll down until you reach the base of the penis, release the tip. Proceed.

After using it, the condom should not be removed when the penis is completely flaccid. It should be removed far away from your partner's genitals while its semi - erect, and it should be retired pushing from the base.

Don’t check a condom for tears or holes. Unless you see a hole in the condom, or your partner finds semen in unwanted places, assume the condom is undamaged. Avoid manipulating it too much. Wrap in toilet paper, throw it in the garbage and wash your hands afterwards. The contact with your partner's fluids should be minimal.
